Soapbox Press, a publishing company made up of three out of four graduates from Winchester School of Art have just launched their latest publication, Shelving the Body.
On Wednesday 23rd April 2014 Central Saint Martins opened its doors to hundreds of eagle eyed book lovers, waiting to capture a glance of Shelving the Body by Darragh Casey. Wine was poured, networking was at its prime and most importantly, the book was met with delight.
Soapbox Press and Darragh Casey have joined together to create Shelving the Body, a collaborative book showcasing Casey’s striking shelf portraiture that brings together the work of four of the artist’s individual projects.
Darragh works with portraiture, but differently to what you’d most likely expect. He provokes a person out of their usual environment, allowing them to keep only objects and places them all on a series of sporadic shelving. Each shelf is thought out, manufactured for individuals and the objects that make up their life.
Shelving the body is the result of this fascinating collaboration between Darragh Casey and Soapbox Press. Its pages filled with Casey’s intricate shelf portraiture, and the initial ideas and sketches that brought it into existence. Soapbox recognises how vital it is to look at the work behind the final piece: the ideas, the early sketches, the first hopes. They also recognise the depth to his placement and positioning, the reasons behind his choice of objects for each shelf and his method of construction.
